John McAfee arrested in Spain and awaits extradition to the US | Digital Trends Spanish

John McAfee, the infamous creator of the antivirus that bears his last name, has been detained in a Spanish jail since Saturday, the agency reported Reuters.

McAfee – who made headlines in August when he was arrested in Germany for wearing a female thong as a mask – was detained at Barcelona airport as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport.

The English computer programmer is accused of fraud in the United States and had an international arrest warrant.

A judicial source told Reuters that after being detained by Spanish police, McAfee was presented to a higher court judge via video call and subsequently sent to prison without bail, where he will await the extradition process.

John McAfee has twice run for president of the United States.

Another source, from the Department of Justice of the region of Catalonia, reported that the businessman was in Brians 1 prison, located 45 minutes by car from Barcelona.

After his arrest, McAfee’s official Instagram account posted the message “McAfee free” with a photo of the Englishman.

United States federal prosecutors filed a formal indictment against McAfee for tax avoidance.

That came shortly after the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that it had filed civil charges against McAfee, alleging that the businessman had recommended buying cryptocurrencies without disclosing that he was receiving money from the issuers of those currencies. Just for that business he would have received more than $ 23.1 million dollars.

It is said that he also received money for consulting, lectures and for the sale of the rights to his life story for a documentary.
