The court of first instance number 2 of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has ordered the reopening of the case of the disappearance of Yéremi Vargas. The minor disappeared when he was 7 years old on March 10, 2007 in Vecindario, south of Gran Canaria. An order issued on September 2 has collected that the case be re-investigated, as it has advanced ABC and has confirmed Canary Now. The boy’s family has requested that new evidence be collected and the order urges the prosecutor to pronounce himself.
On March 10, it was 14 years since Yéremi’s disappearance. The last time he was seen he was playing in a field near the family home. This year the mother of the minor, Ithaisa Suárez, assured that they were about to be able to reopen the case because they had new documents. Suárez pointed out that the pandemic delayed the entire process, but this allowed them to gather more information.
Ithaisa Suárez released a video this Wednesday to show her joy at the reopening of the case. “We are very happy and I would like the end to come, especially to be able to recover what is left of my son. I would like to find him, that is my goal and that of the whole family. I would like Justice to go to the end. I trust in Justice and I beg the culprit to hand over what is left of Yéremi. We need it. ”
14 years of research
Since the boy disappeared, the investigation has not ceased, despite the fact that the case is closed. The Civil Guard announced in March 2012 that it had data on a vehicle and clothing of the minor. That year, different hypotheses were worked on. Among them, a possible family revenge, human trafficking, pedophilia or organ trafficking.
Along these lines, they investigated 195 people accused of pedophilia, under 65 years of age and with crimes against children under 15 years of age, 15 prisoners accused of these same crimes and several people on the island linked to this type of crime.
The Civil Guard located on June 1, 2016 the main suspect in the disappearance and homicide of Yéremi: Antonio Ojeda El Rubio. At that time, the man was in prison in Algeciras since 2015 for sexually abusing another minor. At the end of that month, El Rubio was transferred to the Juan Grande de Gran Canaria prison. On July 13, he appeared before the judge, but refused to testify and offer DNA samples.
Later, during the month of September 2016, a cellmate of El Rubio said that he had told him how a neighbor killed the minor and burned his body, something that the accused denies; While at the end of 2016, Antonio Ojeda was sentenced to five years in prison for an attack on another minor who was playing on a street in El Doctoral in 2012, leaving prison for this on March 9, 2020, now one year.
