The reception of the Pope to a delegation from Madrid in the Vatican left an unexpected moment (at least for the mayor of the capital). During his presentation, José Luis Martínez-Almeida was designated as “the heir of the great Manuela” by Francisco, who thus remembered his predecessor in the consistory of the Spanish capital, Manuela Carmena.
The alderman agreed to the Apostolic Palace and when he was introduced by the cardinal and archbishop of Madrid, Carlos Osoro, the Pope said between laughs “the heir of the great Manuela.” Martínez-Almeida smiles when he hears it but does not respond, as seen in the video of the meeting.
Francisco knows Manuela Carmena, mayor of the Spanish capital between 2015 and 2019, and she also met him several times in the Vatican.
The popular mayor went to the Holy See within the framework of the Holy Year for the IV centenary of the canonization of San Isidro Labrador. Also in the delegation was the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the government delegate in that region, Mercedes González, and Cardinal Osoro. The Pope asked them “unity in diversity” and, especially, to focus on the most vulnerable.
