Lenovo follows Sony and will not attend Mobile World Congress 2022: its presence will be virtual

If everything goes as scheduled, from February 28 to March 3, MWC 2022 will take place (in person) in Barcelona. From the event we already knew that there will be a significant loss, Sony, which a few weeks ago announced that it would not go, and today we must add one more: Lenovo.

The Chinese firm, parent company of Motorola, has posted a tweet in his official Twitter profile in which he assures that “due to current trends around [la] COVID, Lenovo’s presence at MWC 2022 it will be completely virtual”. In other words, Lenovo will participate in the event, but not in person.

Lenovo opts for a virtual MWC

So it will be the second year in a row that Lenovo does not attend the event, as it happens are Sony. It remains up in the air if Sony and Lenovo will be the exception or if we will see more brands canceling their presence. Last year, without going any further, companies like Ericsson, Google and Nokia, which usually have quite large stands, did not attend Fira.

The most recent case is at CES 2022, the first major event in the world of technology that takes place at the beginning of the year in Las Vegas. During the two weeks prior to the fair there was a constant drip of falls of various multinationals due to the advancement of the ómicron variant. So much so that the organization ended up cutting the duration of CES one day.

What will happen during this month that remains with the MWC? Only time will tell. The GSMA, for its part, said last January 14 that “[la] COVID is a real concern, and unfortunately, in an environment with mixed opinions and predictions about the short-term and long-term impact, some exhibitors and attendees will rethink their plans for this year’s event. Every year we look forward to seeing our community come together, so we’d be disappointed if we didn’t have some of you, but we understand and respect the decisions of our partners.”

As far as the Spanish Pavilion is concerned, 25 companies attended the MWC 2021 and, for this year, 35 national companies had been confirmed as of December. They are more than in the previous edition, but less than the 56 companies that populated the pavilion in 2019.
