Linux Creator Is Asked Personally If He’s Satoshi Nakamoto

Linus Torvalds, famous for creating Linux, ended up drawing attention for “revealing” that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. However, not everyone believed what Linus said, with many feeling that this was another one of the moments when he was making one of his famous jokes or even showing support for Bitcoin.

For Steven Vaughan-Nichols, senior contributor to ZDNet, Torvalds is not the creator of Bitcoin. Steven stated that Torvalds has always been suspected of being Satoshi Nakamoto, but he said that he knows Torvalds well and that for anyone who knows the creator of Linux well, it makes no sense to believe he is Satoshi.

“Torvalds has always been suspected of being Nakamoto (…) But no one who knows him well, and I consider myself one of those people, would think he is the creator of Bitcoin. This has nothing to do with Linus.”

While many people were discussing the evidence and creating theories about whether the claim was true or false, Stevens did what probably others should have done: He personally asked Torvalds if he is Satoshi Nakamoto or not.

Linus Torvalds

To the (un)surprise of many, Torvalds stated that he is not the creator of Bitcoin and he was not even responsible for writing the message that stated this. Linus believes the message was made by someone who may have exploited some “loopholes” in Git to make the joke.

According to Stevens, Linus stated that:

“I believe this was just someone playing a prank and taking advantage of how GitHub works – It shares git objects between different repositories, so you can use an object’s SHA1 ‘name’ to specify something in your own tree and then use my repository as the web name and it looks like the object is in my tree.”

The idea is that another GitHub user managed to get the message “I Am Satoshi” associated with Linus’ repository tree, the truth is that he didn’t even claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto.

And there would be no reason for Linus to lie in this case, since, by all indications, he would be willing to reveal himself to be Satoshi for real. What happened is that, once again, many were fooled by yet another joke in the crypto market.
