Work only according to that maxim by which at the same time you may want to become a universal law
In a few years only a middling elite will understand the title of this article. Only a select group will be able to consider under what ethical premises it directs its life. There has never been more talk of ethics and we have never strayed further from a secular ethics and a deontology of the various professions that remains outside the purely ideological or religious discipline and that is capable of being valid for all individuals who practice an art or a profession. It will be another world, which I will not judge, but it will not be the one that has brought us here.
It is increasingly evident that the alleged controversies that run through the networks or the media or the disputes of messaging groups are only so unless one dispenses with the guiding principles of a common ethics. That is what is breaking down in our society. A community of values and, at the same time, filters and personal limits and conscience that served for centuries to govern not only life in society, but also one’s own life, that of the individual who aspired to live well and, of course, to die well. for that other life in which he believed or for dissolution into nothingness.
Teachers and citizens met yesterday before the Ministry of Education to demand that a progressive government not leave adolescents without a minimum mandatory contact with Philosophy. Some two hundred people say, some traveling since dawn to arrive, they were the only silent cry that will not reach a future that will be blacker than a present that already stinks. No human being can perfect himself without an ethical philosophy with which to govern his life. Some have sublet that personal work to a religion that sets the principles for them, but for those who have to seek that internal guide, Philosophy, and ethics as a subdivision, represents an inexcusable guide. That cry in the void to which almost no one has paid attention is a collective suicide, as I already told you in “They kill philosophy, they murder the future.” Only today I want to give you a few current samples of why if one is imbued with personal and professional ethics, one knows perfectly well that the “controversies” or “scandals” or “dilemmas” that they present us are sometimes not such, that there is only one correct road.
I confess to a first Catholic education, then a secular one, and a Kantian vocation. From these different perspectives I think that any of the formulations of the categorical imperative is enough to choose the ethical paths of life. I remember how they made me learn: “Act in such a way and in such a way that the maxim of your will can be elevated to the category of universal law” or, more simply said, that what is presented to you as good and beneficial is only so if that goodness is maintained by extending it to all humanity. I give an example: “he who robs a thief has a thousand years of forgiveness” says the popular saying in a maxim that does not resist the ethical analysis that I propose. Just imagine a world in which all those who rob a thief are exonerated (morally and criminally) and in which since everyone steals, doing good, everyone becomes a thief and in turn potential victims. Such a society is not possible, ergo neither is it acceptable if I do it alone.
Apply this maxim to the controversy over whether the MasterChef production company should or should not include the recordings of the ill-fated actress Verónica Forqué in the final montage of Maestros de la Costura and MasterChef Junior. I am not going to blame anyone for the tremendous personal decision to commit suicide, which, without a doubt, responds to a series of vital circumstances that we will never be able to glimpse, but rather to the issuance of posthumous images of a person who has removed the life, recorded in the time before that terrible decision. It is not about reproducing his films, about when he was in full power and living and working happily, but about emitting the final death throes of a soul that could no longer carry the weight of life. Something that would not provide any social benefit but an economic benefit, since that call of the morbid that stimulates the lowest spirits would represent an audience spur that would translate into benefits. Try to make that premise a universal maxim. Formulate it: “It is good to use what we have of a person who took his or her life or who died tragically to improve our own economic and personal expectations” or “It is good to traffic in anything as long as it guarantees benefit and also do it in a medium which is an essential public service that we all pay for “. This is the answer that the RTVE committee has to give Shine and I have no doubts about what it should be, although every ethical case admits a debate in the light of reason.
Ethics is an internalized value, not a mere committee. This is valid for the last episode that happened in the elections to the Ethics Commission of the prosecutorial career. They tell me that, in previous conversations, the president of the electoral board recommended to the representatives of other associations of prosecutors not to get involved in the promotion of candidates so that prosecutors could present themselves individually and achieve excellence and not mere representation ideological. It happened that a posteriori the very association to which the president of the board belongs, the majority and conservative Association of Prosecutors, approached its associates to urge them to vote for their candidates. “We can enforce the ideology of the Association of Prosecutors,” they said in the statement. So while one of its members, president of the process, urged the Progressive Union of Prosecutors and the APIF to stay out of the process ethically, the AF launched to conquer an organ with all its energy to “enforce its ideology “which by definition belongs to a movement and which is synonymous with ideology. They have succeeded. They have filled all the posts of the Ethics Commission of the Prosecutor’s Office, which will now only provide a concrete vision of the moral philosophy of the members of the Public Ministry. Undoubtedly, it is not very ethical either to request from others a behavior that you do not accept, as has happened, or to let the idea that whoever respects these principles already discussed becomes a fool who loses the opportunity.
We have the different measuring sticks that the CGPJ applies even in ethical terms. Different measuring stick and categorical imperative are incompatible and less in the effort to establish the good or bad practices of a State power, beyond the red line of what is punishable, which by definition is what is unacceptable. The sanctioning norms are the last red line of morals and ethics, the line that society is not willing for you to transfer, the line that assures you of punishment. The Judges’ Ethics Commission met in a conference at the headquarters of the Council to magistrates with a presence in networks to see what the proper behavior of the judges should be in them and at the same time we continue without knowing what response Lesmes intends to give to the Minister of Justice. Catalan justice protesting the tweets of a Barcelona judge, ambushed under a pseudonym, who asked on Twitter for his colleagues to rule against the Generalitat whether or not he was right. This call for active prevarication has now gone more than fifteen days without any response, while a single tweet from Ione Belarra criticizing the Supreme Court deserved an express meeting of the Permanent Commission and an urgent statement of rejection. Analyze whether that rush to censure those of one sign and that forgetfulness to reproach those of another can be elevated to a universal category.
Do you think that many of the interventions of political leaders in Congress – as this week shows – pass the slightest ethical reflection, be it Kantian or as Christian as these leaders claim to be?
And most of the participants still had compulsory Philosophy in 2º of BUP and if they were not catechized by Catholic morality they had several years of Ethics and Morals.
Look what awaits us.
