Luis Carrion Cruz (Managua, 1952) is one of the nine commanders who led the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) that fought against the Somoza dictatorship in the 1970s. He did so alongside the now president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega. During its first government, Carrión served as Vice Minister of the Interior (1980-1987) and Minister of the Economy (1988-1990) .In the 1990s, he decided to move away from Sandinismo due to discrepancies with the FSLN and the evolution of Daniel Ortega himself. , who led the country between 1979 and 1990, and regained power in 2007. Carrión joined the party Democratic Union of Renovation (MRS), a split from the FSLN, founded in 1995 by the vice president (between 1985-1990) and writer Sergio Ramirez.
