Madison Keys defeats Krejcikova to advance to Australian Open semifinals

American Madison Keys advanced to the Australian Open semifinals on Tuesday by defeating French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.

The American, number 51 in the world, beat the Czech under the brutal heat of Melbourne 6-3 and 6-2.

With this, Keys will face the winner of the duel between the world number one, the Australian Ashleigh Barty, and the American Jessica Pegula, in search of the final of the tournament.

“It means a lot,” Keys said after the win.

“Last year was really tough and I did everything I could with my team to prepare for the off-season and focus on starting fresh for next season,” Keys added.

“Wow, that’s been going really well so far. I’m really proud of myself,” she added.

It is the second time Keys has reached a semi-final in Melbourne, after reaching it in 2015 when she lost to Serena Williams, who went on to win the tournament.
