These positions do not mean that it is among the cities with the most pollution in the world, since around 90 cities are included in the classification, the two or three most relevant in each country. However, it does mean that the capital has become one of the cities with the highest pollution values in the European Union, only behind Milan, which ranks fifth (in Thursday’s ranking).

The air quality portal of the Madrid City Council also warned that the air quality on Wednesday had been poor. The Index, which is based on European Union standards, was just one notch below the most negative value on the scale.

The areas where the quality was poor for a longer period of time are Cuatro Caminos, Méndez Álvaro, Plaza Castilla, Vallecas and Plaza Elíptica. In addition, according to the report made by the Consistory, the level of PM10 (solid or liquid particles of dust, ash, soot, metallic, cement or pollen), dispersed in the atmosphere, exceeded the recommended limit value in the areas of Casa de Campo , Castellana, Cuatro Caminos, Aguirre Schools, Farolillo, Méndez Álvaro, Moratalaz, Plaza Castilla, Plaza Elíptica, Sznchinarro, Tres Olivos, Embassy Urbanization and Vallecas.

IQAir indicates that the capital has a concentration of PM2.5 (particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers) of 25 µg/m³ on Thursday, five times higher than the quality value established by the World Health Organization. The company also anticipates that the level of contamination will continue to be high on Friday and it will not be until Saturday when the values will be within the recommended parameters again.
