Madrid Pride is presented with criticism of Almeida: “He does not respect minorities, he is not the mayor of all citizens”

“We are going to talk about this mayor,” warned Uge Sangil, before the presentation of the Pride festivities, in a statement to journalists. The president of FELGTBI+, one of the organizing federations of MADO (Madrid Orgullo) arrived ready to criticize the mayor’s refusal to place the rainbow flag in Cibeles. “It continues in the same of not hanging the flag, which is also of the citizenship. He is a mayor who does not respect all minorities in the city of Madrid”, she lamented. The words were repeated later during the press conference. “You are not the mayor of all the citizens of Madrid”, he said in a fiery attack, after which two PP councilors left in protest at the act .

The presentation began to heat up last Friday, when the councilor for Recupera Madrid [la formación de escindidos de Más Madrid] Marta Higueras denounced that from the consistory the organizers were being hindered. “They want it to go wrong,” the mayor of the Mixed Group warned then, denouncing that conditions were being imposed on the organization to make “its normal development and operation unfeasible.” This Tuesday Higueras has been more optimistic. “We are going to win this pulse, there is going to be Pride”, she has assured, because she, she has said “diversity enriches” society and is “much stronger than what the right wing believes”. However, she has accused the City Council, like the socialist Mar Espinar, of delaying in presenting the necessary security, cleaning, evacuation or noise exemption plans that will allow the concerts to be held.

Deputy Mayor Begoña Villacís has been more diplomatic and has expressly asked to “vindicate the people who are present” and not so much to remember “those who are missing”, and has cited the politicians present at the event, including all the spokespersons of the opposition groups except for Vox and the PP councilors José Fernández (Central district mayor) and Almudena Maíllo (responsible for the Tourism area), who later left the room.

Villacís has highlighted that this year the organization of the Pride has been coordinated from the Vice Mayor’s Office and has confirmed that the Pride “is going to be celebrated as it has always been celebrated”, although he has recognized that there are “fringes” to close. He has also announced that this Tuesday a meeting of the organizers with the Security area would take place, which until now has been preparing the NATO device.

After the departure of her government colleagues from the PP, Begoña Villacís has defended the work of those councilors and has recalled that the Madrid City Council was one of the main sponsors of the event: “I would like us to be fairer, because there is no a single measure in which this City Council has taken steps back ”. “I don’t know what would be of this Pride if I weren’t a vicalcaldesa, it’s not fair when you take a part for the whole”, she added as a criticism of the harsh words dedicated to the mayor and his councillors.
