Marco Schwartz, new Head of Opinion at elDiario.es; Elena Cabrera, editor-in-chief of Culture


The journalist and writer Marco Schwartz, with a long professional career in Spain and Colombia, has joined elDiario.es as head of Opinion. Its objective will be to promote a fundamental section for this newspaper at a time of extraordinary complexity in Spain and the world, in which the analysis and interpretation of the facts will be increasingly essential tools to understand and contextualize events.

Schwartz, a civil engineer by training and a master’s degree in journalism from El País/UAM, began his journalistic career as a reporter in his native Colombia, where he won the prestigious Simón Bolívar award for investigation.

He also held the position of correspondent in New York before settling, more than three decades ago, in Spain. In this country he has been a reporter for Cambio 16, head of Internacional for El Siglo, diplomatic correspondent for El Periódico and head of Opinion in the first stage of Público, where he arrived at the hands of the then director of that medium and today director of elDiario. is, Ignacio Scholar. Subsequently, he directed the newspaper El Heraldo in Colombia for six years. Back in Madrid, he joined as a columnist and member of the editorial committee of elDiario.es. Schwartz has also been an analyst for TVE, RNE and La Ser. In the literary field, he has published two novels, Vulgata Caribe and El salmo de Kaplan, translated into German. The second won the Latin American novel prize La Otra Orilla and was made into a film

Schwartz succeeds Gumersindo Lafuente, who previously served as deputy director. Lafuente retires, but will continue to be linked to elDiario, writing and coordinating the printed magazines. He will also direct the political journalism course that this newspaper will launch soon with the Carlos III University.

Elena Cabrera, editor-in-chief of Culture

In another movement in the newsroom, Elena Cabrera, until now head of the Culture section, has become the chief editor, with the task of intensifying the cultural coverage of the newspaper, a strategy that has been reinforced with new additions to the section during this year.

Cabrera has been linked to elDiario.es since its foundation, first as a collaborator and then as editor of Sociedad, where she dealt especially with issues of historical memory. However, most of her journalistic career has focused on cultural information.

Author of the book ‘Some lagoons’ (La Imprenta, 2021), an “overwhelming report” in which she investigated the whereabouts of her grandfather while revealing, from the hidden side of journalistic work, the coverage of information on memory historical. This year ‘The masked woman’ (Libros.com) has appeared, the intimate diary that she wrote during confinement for elDiario.es in which the impact of the measures taken to combat the pandemic from the domestic, motherhood and neighborhood.

In addition to his work at elDiario.es. Elena Cabrera has been a journalist for media such as ADN.es, Lainformacion.com, El Confidencial or the radio station M21. She has also worked for the Benicàssim Festival and on the MTV television network.

Marta Barandela, editor-in-chief of Edition and Cover

Added to these appointments is that of Marta Barandela as editor-in-chief of Edition and Cover. Barandela has a degree in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication from the Carlos III University of Madrid. She went through the newsrooms of Cadena SER and El Mundo during her internship. She came to elDiario.es in 2016 to learn as an intern in the Politics and Table sections, and since then she has been linked to this newspaper.

In 2017 he joined the weekend team, where he carried out tasks related to the management of social networks and the cover. Since September 2019, she has been the section chief at the Editing Desk. As editor-in-chief, she will now coordinate the start-up of the newspaper, with special attention to the hierarchy of information, the big news bets of the day and the pulse of the last hour.
