Mazinger Z’s cane that reminds you how old you are | Digital Trends Spanish

The Japanese Kiyoshi Nagai, better known as Gō Nagai, is a true idol for those around 50 years of age. On September 6 he turned 76 years old and social networks greetings and congratulations were flooded. And it is that many of those who were born around 1970 grew up together with one of their greatest creations: Mazinger Z.

The manga created by Gō Nagai was released on September 12, 1972 and marked a milestone: unlike other Japanese comics that had remote-controlled guided robots -like Tetsujin 28-gō, known in Mexico as Ironman28– or android type -like Astroboy-, Mazinger Z it was the first where the machine was manned by a human.

The reception was spectacular and the manga quickly became a bestseller. The Toei Animation studio, perhaps anticipating the success, had sealed an alliance to turn it into an anime, which was released on Japanese television in December of the same year.

Although the anime of Mazinger Z It only aired for two years in Japan, with a total of 92 episodes, it is considered as the precursor anime of the genre wick and that it has been one of the hallmarks of Japanese animation. In fact, it inspired other series like Gundam (1979) or Macross (1982), which together with other series would give life to Robotech (1985) in the West.

Curious staff of Mazinger Z

As a way to remind you that you are around half a century old (or approaching fast), the toy firm Bandai already markets a curious cane based on Mazinger Z. Sure, it is a humorous one, but it serves to remind you of all the time that has passed since the premiere of the hit of Gō Nagai.

The device was launched on the Japanese market in 2018, in collaboration with Kowa, a manufacturer of wellness items. “It casually incorporates the color of the robot image, which makes it an easy-to-use product, while providing character,” Bandai describes in its website.

The item retails for 10,780 yen (about $ 100), but can only be purchased in Japan. However, there are some reselling sites, like eBay, where you can also buy it, although you will have to pay a little more.

Controversial and late release in Latin America

Despite its success in Japan, the anime only began to be distributed in the late 1970s and even the mid-1980s in Spain and Latin America, so many of its fans on this side of the planet are just in their 40s. .

Its arrival in the region was not without controversy: except in Mexico, where it was released in 1986, the high levels of violence forced it to be censored in many countries in the region.

In Spain, Spanish Television only broadcast 33 episodes in 1978 and it was only in 1993 that Telecinco broadcast it in its entirety.

It arrived in Chile in 1979 through the current Channel 13 – then owned by the Catholic Church – but it was withdrawn due to the protests of the parents. Another attempt in 1982, now by UCTV, would also fail. Only in 1998 were all the episodes aired.

The United States was not exempt from controversies either: in 1984 only 64 of the 92 episodes were broadcast.
