Mu variant could evade certain antibodies | Digital Trends Spanish

Health authorities in the United States are evaluating the severity of the Mu variant of the coronavirus and the impact it could have compared to other mutations.

According to Anthony Fauci, the country’s top epidemiologist and White House advisor on this matter, this variant could circumvent the protection offered by some types of antibodies.

In conversation with the CBS channel, the professional explained: “The concern is that it has a constellation of mutations that would suggest that it can evade the protection of certain antibodies.”

Fauci also explained that the United States still does not have enough data to determine the efficacy of anti-COVID-19 vaccines against the Mu variant, although he acknowledged that the third booster dose was found to be very effective against all strains that have been studied up to moment.

According to the expert, the US health authorities take all the variants very seriously. In any case, Fauci pointed out that, at the moment, the Mu strain does not represent an immediate threat to the population.

Of course, a lot of research is still needed regarding this mutation, especially how contagious it can become or how dangerous it would be to people. This is because it is one of the last variants discovered.

It should be remembered that, a few weeks ago, the United States authorities granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine, which is expected to encourage the population to be vaccinated and thus reduce the number of coronavirus infections.
