Netflix adds former EA executive to its video game area | Digital Trends Spanish

There has been talk for some time that Netflix is thinking of expanding into the world of video games. And now, according to a new report from Bloomberg, the efforts become more concrete as the company added a former Electronic Arts executive to promote its new area.

This person is Mike Verdu, who joins Netflix as Vice President of Game Development. Verdu worked at Electronic Arts in the area of mobile video games and was previously part of Kabam, a company that is also dedicated to the same segment. But after EA, Verdu was on Facebook, specifically in the area of video games for virtual reality and Oculus.

Beyond the name, it is not yet clear what Netflix intends to do in the world of video games or how they will implement their strategy. One possibility would be that they act as a kind of publisher and that they create products around their best-known franchises, that are published on other types of platforms such as consoles or PC.

However, it may be more plausible that they directly get into video games via streaming, just as Google Stadia, Amazon Luna or xCloud do so far. With this system, the user would not need hardware as such, but a device with an internet connection and some type of input device type control or joystick, although on cell phones that is not exactly necessary.

Now, the world of videogames by streaming it already has several competitors; in addition to those mentioned before, there are PlayStation with PS Now and NVIDIA with its Geforce Now. And the big problem that companies like Google or Amazon have had is not on the technology side of streaming, but for the production of the content. Google, with all the resources it has, has been unable to create differentiating products for Stadia and has even gone to the point of closing its own studios and reducing its operation.

Amazon, for its part, has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to video games that have lasted only a few months, such as the case of the failure Crucible.

How much data Netflix consumes

The latter reveals that entering the video game business is not easy and not so much because of the necessary resources but because the work and production flow is very different from other areas. Perhaps Netflix’s experience in audiovisual content – which today is closer to video games than the main businesses of Amazon or Google – can give it an advantage, as well as the technology of streaming that they themselves have developed is already more mature.

For now, what is clear is that the hiring of Mike Verdu is a sign that Netflix may be serious about this.
