One week aboard the new Audi Q5 Sportback 2021 | Digital Trends Spanish

The update to the popular Audi Q5 compact crossover for 2021, the brand’s best-selling model in the United States, came with a second body style, making the Q5 for the first time in its history a two-model lineup from this year.

This second style follows the recent German trend of sloping the tailgate top line of its crossovers, adding a generous dose of visual sportiness. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Audi already offer this variant in several of their crossovers, and now the new Audi Q5 Sportback marks the expansion of this style, which the Germans call coupe despite having four doors, to the Audi’s strategy in the compact truck segment, where it competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and the BMW X4. The sportiness of the Q5 Sportback sacrifices a total of 1.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded, which seems like a fair trade to us.

The design of its rear quarter is not the only thing that separates the new Audi Q5 Sportback from the regular Q5. The new model comes standard with sporty front seats, a panoramic sunroof and 19-inch twin-spoke five-spoke design wheels, which on the model I tested had been replaced by 20-inch five-spoke wheels, a separate option that has a cost $ 800 (by 2022 all Q5 Sportbacks will have 20-inch wheels). All Q5 Sportbacks also feature the S Line exterior visual package and removal of the roof rails. The result is a truck with an unmistakably sporty flavor that made the transition to the coupe body without losing an iota of elegance, something that some of its competitors cannot proclaim.

The Q5 Sportback is equipped with the latest version of Audi’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which this time produces 261 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, and is mated to the ultra-fast dual-clutch transmission. Seven-speed S tronic and features Audi’s proven Quattro all-wheel drive system. The manufacturer estimates that the Q5 Sportback can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km / h) in 5.7 seconds while the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA for its acronym in English, estimates a consumption of 23 miles per gallon in the city, 28 on the highway, and 25 on the combined cycle. In my weeks with the Q5 Sportback I managed to see 30 miles per gallon a couple of times.

The cabin of the Q5 Sportback without being ostentatious offers the luxury that derives from the high quality of its materials and not from the abundant use of the typical luxury materials such as wood and leather, which in the Q5 Sportback is scarce and very good taste. Its sports seats are comfortable and offer both the support needed to end a long journey with a rested body, and an ideal driving position. However, it should be noted that they could benefit from a little less firmness.

A 10.1-inch touchscreen is used to interface with the vehicle’s MMI multimedia system, which in our test model featured a 705-watt 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and Sirius / XM satellite radio. The instrument cluster is contained in a 12.3-inch screen and features Audi’s virtual cockpit system, which managed to keep my use of Apple CarPlay to a minimum (the vehicle also has Android Auto connectivity), as the system maps virtual cockpit work better than any option that the smartphones currently offer. To ensure that drivers do not spend a lot of time mesmerized by the virtual cockpit, Audi equipped the test model with clear and comprehensive instruments projected onto the windshield.

Our Q5 Sportback Prestige test model is the top-of-the-line variant and features assistants with semi-autonomous operating capabilities such as the Parking Assist, or the Lane Keeping Assist.

The experience behind the wheel will not be strange to those familiar with the latest Audi products. The Q5 Sportback is equipped with the same super-light steering of other models of the brand, something that changes when choosing the driving mode Dynamic or when using settings Sport for guidance on individual customization options for handling characteristics. However, on city streets the regular mode of management is a welcome feature.

The 2.0-liter turbo engine offers adequate power for the size of the vehicle, and it never left us wanting more power, not even on the interstates in South Florida where you always have to be alert with both your eyes and your feet. However, for those who think they need more power Audi offers an SQ5 Sportback with a 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine that produces 349 horsepower.

We were not surprised by the successful and always timely operation of the S tronic transmission, as it is something we have experienced in other Audi models. This gearbox never lost momentum and always managed to get the most out of the 261 horsepower available when it was needed. The brakes always brought the vehicle to a stop with authority and the pedal never showed fatigue in regular driving situations.

The model we tested with the $ 8,700 Prestige package, 20-inch wheels, and $ 350 rear chest airbags, had a total price of $ 59,340 including transportation. While this number is firmly planted on the expensive side of the budget proposition, between the $ 47,800 starting price of the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback and the price cap, most of the public should get their ideal Q5 Sportback.
