Oriol Junqueras: “The pardon is a triumph that shows the weaknesses of the State”

The president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, has linked this Sunday the pardon to an “attempt” by the State to “protect itself” from the resources that the prisoners of the procés have begun to file before the European Justice against the Supreme Court, “The pardon it is a triumph that demonstrates some of the weaknesses of the State apparatuses “, which, according to Junqueras,” will not resist the confrontation “with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Although the judgments of the ECHR may take several years, Junqueras has argued that with the grace measure that the Government predictably will grant the nine convicted of sedition this Tuesday, the State “tries to protect itself” before the European Justice “by reversing some of the abusive measures that has taken “, such as the imprisonment of the independence leaders.

In an interview in Catalunya Ràdio, Junqueras has not answered if he wants a pardon, as he did when the Supreme Court requested it, and has defended that his position is “amnesty, self-determination and independence.” However, he has recognized that the pardons are an improvement of the current situation: “If we are more useful being outside the prison than inside, it is evident that we want to be useful.”

Junqueras has replied to the toughest sectors of the independence movement that they maintain that the pardon will not help independence, and has said that “they are wrong.” “If we are in jail it is because they are convinced that if we are out we will help independence more,” said Junqueras, who added that he will try to help from where necessary, from the dialogue table or from wherever ERC considers.

Regarding the act of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the Liceu de Barcelona this Monday to defend the pardons, to which no member of the Government will attend, Junqueras has agreed with the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonés, that if the Central executive “wants to do something that does it, but stops speculating on these issues, because all it does is speculate on the suffering of many people.” And he has cited not only the prisoners, but also those affected by the Court of Auditors and other legal proceedings derived from the procés as the macrocause of the investigating court 13 of Barcelona on the preparations for 1-O.
