Weta, the company founded by Peter Jackson with Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk, is one of the most important and recognized in the field of visual effects.
The company has been behind major film and television productions, such as Avengers, game of Thrones, Avatar and The lord of the rings, among other. It should be remembered that with the latter the director achieved worldwide recognition.
For this reason, the announcement that indicated that, from now on, Weta Digital will change owners was striking, this after Jackson decided to sell the firm to Unity for $ 1,625 million.
Unity is a company that focuses on 3D content. As announced, the decision to acquire Weta is because they seek to stimulate their own metaverse platform.
Thus, the purchase seeks to extend the reach of Weta, which includes its visual effects tools in its cloud service so that people around the world can access these functions.
“The Weta Digital tools created limitless possibilities for us to bring to life the worlds and creatures that originally lived in our imaginations,” said Peter Jackson.
“Giving aspiring creatives access to Weta Digital technology will be nothing short of a game changer and Unity is the company that will make this vision a reality.”
From now on Unity will remain with Weta Digital’s technology and engineering team. This multi-million dollar deal is expected to be completed later this year.
