The Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, announced on Saturday that he will not run in the 2022 elections, in which he could run for the position of vice president, and that will retire from political life, which paves the way for her daughter to be a candidate to lead the country.
“The overwhelming … feeling of the Filipinos is that I am not qualified and it would be a violation of the Constitution to go beyond the law, the spirit of the Constitution” to run for vice president, explained Duterte.
“Today I announce my retirement from political life,” he concluded.
The Constitution prevents him from running for reelection
Duterte, who is barred by the Constitution from running for a second term, remains almost as popular in polls as when he won the 2016 election promising to clean the country of drugs.
The president had announced that he would be a candidate for vice president and his announcement this Saturday is a real surprise. The head of state did not specify when he will actually leave politics.
Duterte has also not commented on who he will support as his successor, although many consider it to be his daughter Sara, who is expected to protect him from criminal charges before the investigation of the International Criminal Court for his violent war against drug trafficking.
