President of Mexico calls for Julian Assange to be released | Digital Trends Spanish

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, called for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be released as he is “unjustly in jail.”

The president affirmed that the Australian activist, who is being held in London’s Belmarsh prison awaiting extradition to the United States, is treated “viciously” for revealing cases of espionage, similar to those that have recently become known with the Pegasus software.

López Obrador referred to Assange when speaking about the espionage cases in Mexico, in particular the international investigation that showed that the Government of Enrique Peña Nieto used a mechanism to try to infect about 15,000 cell phones with this same software.

This espionage would have even affected the close environment of the president, since 50 people, including family members and collaborators, would have been spied on through this method.

“All this has to do with the old regime, they were the practices to have control, to intimidate, to manipulate, to impose themselves; This was a distinctive feature throughout the neoliberal period, practically all governments, even before, but espionage was perfected from a new stage that began with Carlos Salinas, ”the president emphasized.

In this way, the head of state compared the recent investigation carried out by various global media outlets with what Julian Assange did with WikiLeaks and highlighted the importance of disclosing this information.

He also strongly urged that these espionage practices must end.

“All this must disappear, that is the most important thing, non-repetition, the fact that no one is spied on because nobody should be spied on, opponents must be respected and the intelligence systems have to be oriented towards defense and the protection of the security of the States ”, he mentioned.
