Prices of main construction materials increase up to 75% in 2021


The Retail Price Indices of the Main Construction Materials (IPMC), available in the districts of Panama and San Miguelito registered significant increases during 2021 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, mainly in the case of the ½” steel rod (30 foot length) which increased 75.8%, zinc N°26 corrugated galvanized (foot) 73.8% and stroller foot No. 4 in 67.4%.

According to the Report of the Retail Price Indices of the Main Construction Materials (IPMC) published by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Inec) from January to December 2021, PVC plastic pipe (10-foot section) increased its price by 51.9%, stranded electrical cable No. 12 (foot) in 24.4% and clay blocks No. 4 (cent) in 4.4%.

In the same sense, but to a lesser extent, the price of unplaned espavé wooden foot rose by 2.3%, the yard of sand and cent of cement block No. 4, both at 0.2% and the yard of stone No. 4 at 0.1%.

On the contrary, the IP of the outlet for polarized box (each one) decreased 2.5% and the 94-pound bag of gray cement at 2.3%; while the ready-mixed concrete (m3 ) did not show variation.

The Inec points out that since there were limitations in the activity of the construction materials trade, from March to May 2020, as well as difficulties in obtaining prices, due to the health crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a representative cumulative average has been determined, based on the applicable months with data.
