Primavera Sound prepares its landing in Madrid without public subsidies and a stage in the Metropolitan Stadium

The first edition of the Primavera Sound festival in the City of Rock in Arganda del Rey will be “a mirror” of the one in Barcelona, ”which does not mean that it is identical”, the director of Primavera Sound, Alfonso Lanza, clarified in the presentation held this Wednesday at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid. The event will be held between June 5 and 11, 2023, with events in halls and spaces in the capital, as well as three days at the Arganda venue, which already served as the location for the Rock In Rio festival in 2008. From then, those lands have had no other use.

In the act, which has had the presence of the Minister of Culture of the Community of Madrid, Marta Rivera de la Cruz; the delegate of the Culture area of the Madrid City Council, Andrea Levy, and the mayor of Arganda del Rey, Guillermo Hita, Lanza have assured that the economic contribution of the administrations involved is “zero euros”, including the Ministry of Culture, an institution who has joined the project today. “We don’t believe in the subsidized festival model,” he added. The budget for the events in Barcelona and Madrid is 65 million euros.

The successful Barcelona macro-festival lands in Madrid after having received proposals from other cities to relocate the second weekend of concerts that has been held in recent years. The fact that the Community of Madrid made the land in Arganda available to the organizers, which they have described as exceptional, was the determining factor in choosing the new event. As can be seen in the model presented to the media, the festival will use a strip of extra land, which was not used by Rock in Río, to expand its venue. “It is a spectacular venue, unique in Europe, designed to hold festivals and with wide possibilities of schedule and sound”, said the director of Primavera Sound Madrid, Almudena Heredero, appointed last September. The festival settles in Madrid “definitively”, Lanza stressed.

Two challenges: mobility and a tight schedule

The arrival of Primavera Sound in Madrid faces two challenges. The first is to be inserted into a calendar where there is already an established festival —Mad Cool, which will take place a month after Primavera and in a new location also in the south of Madrid— and mobility. How to take 100,000 people, which is the estimated public, to a piece of land with no connection to the city, “quickly and safely”, according to Heredero, is one of the great challenges of the organization. The solution they have presented is a connection point between Madrid and the City of Rock at the Metropolitan Stadium.

The organization will provide a continuous round trip shuttle system with a fleet of 400 buses that transport the public, free of charge, between the city and the concert venue. There will be parking spaces in the stadium —which will work with prior reservation but it is still unknown whether they will be paid or not— and also in Arganda del Rey, although the priority is to use the public transport service and this shuttle service. In addition, the stage that will be installed in the Metropolitan will be the location for the concerts on the opening day, on June 7, which will be free.

To the question of this medium about how the appearance of Primavera Sound Madrid is inserted in a calendar in which Mad Cool had been the only great mass event of the Madrid summer, Alfonso Lanza replied: “It has gone very well for us without looking at the sides, we compete with ourselves. Primavera Sound does not come to compete but to complement because it has no comparison with any other festival, neither Mad Cool, nor Tomavistas nor Paraíso, they are not comparable and there is room for everyone”.

The musical fabric of the city

As it has been doing in Barcelona, Primavera Sound carries out a work of interweaving with the musical fabric of the city and programs concerts and other events in halls and spaces, which take place in the days prior to the three days of concerts.

In this sense, the delegate of Culture of the City Council has announced that Serrería Belga will be the space that hosts the Primavera Pro professional meeting.

The only group that is known from the bill is Depeche Mode, who will make a stop in Spain, in both Primavera Sound, on their summer tour of their next album memento mori, They will be the first concerts after the death of Andrew Fletcher. The festival has not announced any other group but before the end of the year they will announce the bulk of their programming. The management maintains its commitment to build a parity poster in gender and attend to diversity.
