Prime Gaming: Latino culture must be in the industry | Digital Trends Spanish

Within the framework of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and which celebrates the contributions of people of Hispanic origin in the United States, we present this interview with Elena Marroquín, marketing manager of Amazon Prime Gaming .

Elena Marroquín grew up in a Mexican neighborhood in Houston and since that origin, she has grown up in the technology industry at Amazon, in charge of the marketing management of Prime Gaming’s video game division.

We spoke with her to observe the landscape of Latino inclusion and women in the industry.

  1. The Latino community has been either underrepresented in the world of video games, or stigmatized. What is being done and what should be done to better promote Latino values in this industry?

It begins by having a presence in the Latino community and Amazon becomes an access vehicle by bringing Amazon Prime and Amazon Prime Gaming to countries like Mexico, Brazil and more. It is also about understanding Latin American countries, their communities, the customs and traditions of the Latino culture to ensure that they are properly represented and included in the industry. Bringing more Hispanics into positions in the gaming industry is a key component to this.

  1. There are not many women who are immersed in the gamer world, how important do you think it is that women gain more ground in this industry?

Representation is very important and being able to see more people who look like you in these roles helps build a roadmap for others to follow suit. Especially in the video game industry, which is dominated by men, the aim is to pave the way for more women, and especially more minority women. It is important that the number of women in the technology and video game industry continues to rise. Whether you’ve always wanted to be in this industry or your career paths have brought you here, every woman in this industry plays a common role: increasing our visibility and helping to break down barriers and stereotypes.

  1. In part of your biography you say that access to video games has been democratized today, is it also a good tool for inclusion?

Today, there are many ways to access video games more easily. If you have a smartphone, a tablet, a computer, a television, etc., you can play with your friends, your family and even with people from all over the world. The video game industry continues to grow and we must continue to work to make games more accessible to everyone, but it is no longer necessary to have to buy an expensive video console to play. I think this has contributed to taking steps towards inclusion and has helped to start breaking down some of those cost barriers.

  1. In particular about Amazon Prime Gaming, you can tell us how you have seen the development of the platform and its adoption by the Latino population.

During my time at Amazon Prime Gaming, it has been exciting to see its continued growth and Amazon’s presence in Latin America, which continues to grow as well. Being able to launch in different countries in Latin America is just another way to make the games more accessible to the Latino community.

  1. How do you see the growth of Twitch as a platform. What lessons can we learn from the interactions that take place here?

Twitch is a great platform for people into gaming and more. It offers creators the opportunity to enter the scene, build their audience by doing what they love, and keep it engaged with their personality. Personally, I also think it is a bit more real and authentic because it is broadcast live and unedited. Platforms like Twitch are not going away anytime soon, as the demand for live streaming is higher than ever. In fact, I usually tell creators that now is their time: to build their presence on the platform and grow their audience.

  1. How do you envision the future of the video game industry in general and in relation to Latinos in particular?

I believe that many companies and industries are realizing the power of Latinos. From our growing population to our purchasing power, we bring tremendous value to this industry. I hope that the video game industry continues to expand its efforts to reach more Latinos in North America, South America, the Caribbean, etc., because we are demonstrating that we are a key audience to reach for their future growth and success.

Finally, a final reflection by Elena Marroquín: “sometimes it can be intimidating to work in a sector where there are not many people who look like you, but that does not mean that you cannot sit at the table. You have to remember that you do belong to it and look for allies who work to help you elevate yourself and others. If there is something that must be highlighted about Latinos, it is that we are a hard-working and resilient community ”.
