Ancient Olympia is considered one of the greatest archaeological treasures in Greece. Now, an interesting collaboration project between the Greek Government and Microsoft aims to digitally preserve this historic city.
This project will use artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to restore the original venue for the Olympic Games, allowing spectators to explore the area as it was more than 2,000 years ago.
How will it work?
With this ambitious agreement, people will be able to visit the site remotely or in person with a RA mobile app.
At the Athens Olympic Museum, HoloLens devices can be used to overlay a digital version of the area.
HoloLens are Microsoft smart glasses that use multiple sensors, advanced optics and holograms to display information and blend with the real world or simulate a virtual environment.
27 monuments will be digitally preserved, including the original Olympic Stadium, the temples of Zeus and Hera and the workshop of the well-known sculptor Phidias.
“The cultural implications of this technology are endless. For the first time, visitors from around the world can virtually visit the cradle of democracy, the ancient site of Olympia, and experience the history first-hand, ”said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
