Putin gives Russian citizenship to Edward Snowden | Digital Trends Spanish


Former CIA agent, Edward Snowdenand which became famous after the leak of the surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the intelligence alliance Five Eyes, received Russian nationality on Monday, September 26.

The technology consultant has been in Vladimir Putin’s country since 2013 after the United States withdrew his passport.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov has confirmed that Russian citizenship was granted to Snowden at his petition.

“In accordance with paragraph ‘a’ of article 89 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, I decide: to grant citizenship of the Russian Federation to the following persons: Edward Joseph Snowden, born June 21, 1983 in the United States United States of America,” says the presidential decree.

As the Russian site Sputnik points out: “Since Snowden barely received Russian citizenship and has not served in its Army, he does not fall into the category of the men who will perform their military service in the framework of the partial mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin.”
