Renfe detects an “anomaly” in Alvia trains that only affects the Extremadura line

Extremadura and the train are almost antonyms. The bad relationship they maintain has not even softened with the start-up of the fast train on its recently launched high-speed platform. Quite the opposite: the continuous delays it has suffered since Tuesday, the first day of commercial service, have generated a crisis of such caliber that it has forced the presidents of Renfe, Isaías Táboas, and Adif, María Luisa Domínguez, to travel to Merida and give explanations.

Apparently, Renfe has discovered an “anomaly” in the Alvia S-730 trains that has only been detected on the Extremadura line and that is the reason for delays of up to more than an hour in the service, such as those suffered by the passengers who on Thursday and this Friday traveled to Madrid on the train that left Badajoz at 7:25 a.m. According to Táboas, the Alvias, “one of the best we have in the fleet”, are experiencing an “overheating of the system” in some sections, so they “reduce their speed to protect the engine” and that technological safety measure causes, to turn, the continuous delays.

Until this problem is corrected, Renfe will increase the time of the journeys so as not to generate frustration among users, but will lower the price of tickets by 50%. The company will study together with Adif over the weekend how much more time will be added, although they hope to correct the incidents “as soon as possible” because it means “breaking a commitment we have with the public and ruining the progress that has been made carried out in Extremadura since 2018 with an improvement in the punctuality and reliability of the service, Táboas stated.

But not all the problems on the new Extremadura-Madrid line are Renfe’s responsibility. The president of Adif has explained that since Tuesday there have been four incidents: three of them due to failures in the diversions that have forced the trains to run on the old, slower track, and another due to a drop in the electrical connection .

The entity in charge of the infrastructures has considered all the incidents resolved, although the technicians are “monitoring” the motor of the pointer of a specific diversion in case it finally becomes necessary to replace it.

María Luisa Domínguez has also reported that the maintenance staff of the entire line will be reinforced in order to act more quickly in the event of any failure.
