Review Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: promising renewal | Digital Trends Spanish

Review Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, the renovation is almost perfect

“I’ve tried many foldables over the years, but none of them have made me want to use it as a personal phone until now.”

  • Its exterior screen is very useful

  • Its beautiful and comfortable design

  • Flawless power

  • Versatility

  • Water and dust resistance

  • Cameras don’t stand out

  • The battery is tight

  • Does not include charger

The mobile phone concept has been around for a few years, but Samsung has been one of the few manufacturers that has put the effort into shaping it. The manufacturer has two folding phone formats in its catalog, the Galaxy Fold book type and the Z Flip in shell mode.

The first Z Flip was presented in 2020 and although it was something new – despite the anachronism of the concept – the phone did not quite convince users (including me). However, the company took all the good things from that first model and mixed it with a few important improvements to get what is, in my opinion, the best folding that we can buy today.

If you want to know why I say this about the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, I invite you to continue reading because I will give you all the details of my experience of using it.

At last a useful secondary screen

The phone maintains an almost identical design to the previous model, with a clamshell format that makes it perfect to carry it on and also to use it folded. Despite the similarities, the phone is more resistant to shocks and abrasions thanks to the Gorilla Glass Victus glass that surrounds it. In addition, it has IPX8 water resistance certification to submerge it up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

On the back of the phone we find two cameras. These are perfectly integrated, there is no protrusion (perfect to store it in the folded pocket). The hinge mechanism is very smooth, so much so that it can even be done with one hand. I cannot assure what the durability of this mechanism is, but according to the manufacturer this component should not cause problems with use as it did in other folding devices in the house.

The Z Flip 3 has a 6.7-inch AMOLED main screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The viewing experience with this panel is excellent and although the indentation in the hinge is slightly visible when the device is fully open, it is not something. that affects the overall experience.

The best thing about the phone’s design is its outer screen. And it is that this is four times larger than the previous model (almost two inches in total). In my time of use with the device I must say that I hardly needed to open it while I had it on the table when working or in my pocket, since from the front screen it is possible to consult up to four lines of notifications (not respond to these), manage the reproduction of apps like Spotify or make payments with Samsung Pay without the need to open the phone.

Power and autonomy

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a flagship and as such comes equipped with the best in terms of power. This is a Snapdragon 888 processor accompanied by 12 GB RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage (my test unit is the one with the most memory).

In general, the phone performs perfectly in all scenarios and its screen also allows us to give it different uses. Like other phones of the brand, it has the Samsung Pair application to link apps and the Edge bar with which it is possible to divide the screen into two sections and use two applications in the foreground simultaneously, something we can do with the mobile placed in an L shape.

The autonomy is not the best on the market, but at least it allowed me to use the phone for a full day without having to connect it to a power outlet. It has 15w fast charging, but don’t expect to find the charger included in the box.

Cameras without upgrades

Although so far the experience with the phone seemed perfect, the photographic section leaves me a bittersweet feeling. And it is that as it happened with the first Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung does not give as much value to the cameras as it does with the design and the power.

Galaxy Z Flip 3

The device offers two cameras of 12 MP each – the secondary is an ultra wide angle – and a front 10 MP. While the results are pleasing, they do not stand out at all compared to other high-end phones on the market, not even those of the manufacturer itself.

In good light we have acceptable photos, with a good level of sharpness, although the colors are slightly saturated. However, with the fall of the light the sensors suffer a lot and the noise is evident in the scene without us being able to avoid it, even when using the dedicated night mode. Portraits are good, but the blur mode is quite tight and although we can choose the amount of blur we want to apply to the background manually, it is very artificial in almost all situations.

In general, they are decisive cameras, but they do not reach the level that a demanding user would demand.

I’ve tried many foldables over the years, but none have made me want to use it as a personal phone until now. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 left me a bitter taste with its cameras and its autonomy, but the design, the power, the usability and above all, the price, more than make up for it.

Keep in mind that despite my good impressions with it, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is not a phone for everyone; It is more a product for those who want to have something different and attractive in their hands, that takes up little space, but without sacrificing other fundamental aspects such as potency.

It is not a cheap mobile, but with its 1,049 euros starting price It is much cheaper than the original model, which was released for 1,550 euros. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 stays in a similar price range to other high-end phones like the Oppo Find X3 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S21.
