Romeva tells the judge that the technicians endorsed the grant for which he is being investigated

Raül Romeva has returned this Wednesday to sit before a judge. Convicted of sedition and embezzlement and pardoned, the former Catalan Foreign Minister faces a new case for this second crime for a subsidy of 40,000 euros granted by his department to an international promotion entity in Catalonia. Romeva has alleged that all the technical reports endorsed the grant.

The case that affects Romeva was opened in the court of instruction 18 of Barcelona last May and represents a new judicial front of the procés, which is still going on in the courts. These are expenses other than those that led to Romeva’s conviction in the Supreme Court (referring to international observers of the referendum) and, according to the Prosecutor’s Office and judge, those that are part of the macro-cause of the preparations for the process that the court has investigated of instruction 13 of Barcelona and that is pending judgment.

The only expense that the judge attributes to Romeva is a direct grant of 40,000 euros to the Federation of Internationally Recognized Catalan Organizations (FOCIR) “without justifying the reasons for the non-attendance” of other candidates to receive the funds. In the case there are a dozen of investigated.

According to sources present in the statement, Romeva has justified the subsidy because the reports of the Generalitat intervention prior to its granting endorsed that it was without competition. And he recalled that the evaluation report after its granting also gave its approval to the grant, something that happened, he added, when he was already incarcerated in the Estremera prison.

The eleven expenses investigated in the case amount to 802,138.81 euros and the majority occurred during the Government of Artur Mas, that is, the previous one chaired by Carles Puigdemont in which Romeva was councilor. These are payments for academic work that would exceed the competence of the Government when dealing with the internalization of the procés and a new Catalan State and direct subsidies to Catalan entities abroad that the judge does not see sufficiently justified.

The expenses are also part of the accounting case that is instructed by the Court of Accounts and that is pending trial after the supervisory body rejected the guarantee that the Government provided to the thirty defendants, among which are Romeva himself, Oriol Junqueras, Carles Puigdemont and Artur Mas.

At the gates of the City of Justice a delegation from ERC and CUP has gathered to support Romeva. The president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, has criticized the judicial investigation. “Once again, those who do not win at the polls, take advantage of the friends of the repressive apparatus of the State to impose the will of the citizen majority and violate democracy,” he asserted, accompanied by other ERC leaders, such as Marta Vilalta , from the CUP, such as Dolors Sabater and Eulàlia Reguant, and the president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart.

In addition to Romeva, this Wednesday he was summoned to declare his former Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Aleix Villatoro, current director of the Consell Català de l’Esport, also pending trial for the preparations for 1-O. Villatoro has availed himself of his right not to testify because the Barcelona Court has yet to decide whether the expenses that the magistrate of the investigating court 18 attributes to him should be part of the macro-trial for the preparations for 1-O that the investigating court investigated 13 .
