Russia blocks Google News for “disinforming” about the war | Digital Trends Spanish

Russia has blocked Google’s automated news aggregator and search engine in the country since March 23.

Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor has accused the Google News service of providing access to false information about the country’s military operations in Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine a month ago, Russia has been silencing most channels that provide a negative view of them and their so-called “special operation”. Google has confirmed that its news service has been restricted and that citizens of the country can no longer access it.

According to the independent Russian news agency, interface, Roskomnadzor said in an official statement that they have blocked the American news resource for giving access to numerous publications and materials that contained “inauthentic and publicly important information about the course of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.”

Russia has been managing the way information reaches its citizens since the conflict began. Several foreign media outlets such as the BBC have been denied access and recently Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were blocked in the country after being declared “extremist” by a Russian court.

Last week, the Russian regulator accused Google and its YouTube video service of carrying out “terrorist activities”. According to Russia, both services broadcast advertising with calls to take out of service the railway communications of Russia and Belarus (an ally of Moscow). The regulator assures that Google’s activities in the country threaten the life and health of Russian citizens.
