Russia announced on Monday the closure of its representation before NATO, as well as that of the military liaison and information offices of the Atlantic Alliance in Moscow, in response to the recent expulsion of eight diplomats from the Russian mission in Brussels. NATO accuses these diplomats of work secretly for the intelligence services of his country. The expulsion left the Russian mission with half its staff.
“In response to the actions of NATO, we stop the activities of our permanent representation before the Alliance, including the work of our main military representative, as of November 1,” the Russian Foreign Minister said at a press conference on Monday. , Sergei Lavrov.
In addition, he announced the upcoming closure of the office of the NATO military liaison mission in Moscow, and said that “the accreditation of its employees will be revoked as of November 1”. It will also close the NATO information office in Moscow, based in the Belgian Embassy. According to Lavrov, the Alliance representatives will be able to direct their questions to the Russian Embassy in Belgium.
One of the NATO ambassadors in Moscow may carry out similar functions in the Russian capital, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The head of Russian diplomacy has found that in the last six years the Russian representation before NATO has been reduced on two occasions and the level of dialogue and cooperation has dropped to a minimum.
“All this confirms that NATO is not interested in any dialogue on equal rights or in any joint work. Therefore we do not see the need to continue acting as if a change were possible in the future, because NATO has already declared the impossibility of these changes, “he said.
