With a strong condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine, the organization of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) announced the decision to suspend the Russian pavilion of the technological event, which begins on February 28 in Barcelona.
The GSMA, the entity that brings together operators and companies in the telecommunications sector, adopted the drastic measure as part of the sanctions that the United States and countries of the European Union are taking against Russia.
“The GSMA strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The situation is moving fast and we understand that several governments are considering broader sanctions against Russia,” the organization said in a statement. release.
He added that the entity follows “all government sanctions and policies” that are applied as a result of the conflict, so “there will be no Russian pavilion at MWC22.”
The event included the participation of 11 Russian technology companies, including SoftMediaLab, TrueConf and SIGMA Messaging. The companies had a space in the pavilion assigned to the Russian Export Centera state entity that promotes Russian exports.
The MWC 2022 will take place between February 28 and March 3 at the Fira de Barcelona, and the organization expects the presence of more than 50,000 people.
Although the GSMA confirmed that the event is going ahead despite the conflict in Eastern Europe, it acknowledged that the event “seems irrelevant” compared to the loss of human life. “Event security is constantly reviewed and adjusted as new information emerges,” he said.
Still, he defended the MWC as “a unifying event with a vision of convening the mobile ecosystem to advance the ways and means in which connectivity can ensure that people, industry and society prosper.”
