Sánchez announces a new call for 720 million for tourism


The Government will launch in March a second call of 720 million of euros for the Tourism sector with European funds’Next Generation‘. This was announced in his speech at a conference on tourism sustainability within the framework of the international tourism fair (Feature) in Madrid. This initiative, he added, represents the “clearest confirmation that the execution of European funds follows a marked course, developing the transformation of the tourism sector“.

In turn, Sánchez has also advanced that within the tourism sustainability program for 2022, “the national gastronomic tourism plan endowed with a budget of 65 million euros”. This is an initiative that has been justified by the attraction of both traditional and avant-garde Spanish gastronomy.

The Chief Executive has defended the Government’s strategy with the sector. In addition to ensuring that European funds must be used to make “a leap in quality”, he recalled that the 3,400 million expected for the activity in the recovery plan, which, as explained, will have an impact of 6,700 million on GDP, is “double the investment budgeted for the tourism sector between 2012 and 2017“In the same way, he highlighted that the 2022 budgets allocate 1,817 million euros to investments in the sector, 35% more than the previous year.

Without destroying employment

The president, who made his speech at the Turespaña stand at Fitur, highlighted that thanks to the measures carried out by the Executive and the private sector “employment has not been destroyed” with the health crisis. And he recalled that 95% of the workers who benefited from the for him are reinstated in their jobs.

He insisted that in addition to the importance of these measures the high percentage of vaccination of the population It has been a fundamental element. And to this we must add European funds, a solution that, unlike the financial crisis, involves having resources “to make the tourism sector even better than it was before the pandemic.”

Sánchez has highlighted that between last January and November there were more than 28 million tourists and that the spending figures per visitor and duration are greater than two years ago. After placing the celebration of Fitur 2022 in an economic recovery that he has considered evident, the head of the Executive has highlighted the importance of European funds to increase the competitiveness of the Spanish economy and in particular of the tourism sector.

The fair is being a good thermometer on the sector. The first figures for attendance at Fitur, which has been held at Ifema since last Tuesday, confirm this, since all initially anticipated expectations are exceeded. And it is that in just its first two days, Fitur has registered the attendance of 60,000 professionals, which represents reaching the total number estimated for its three professional days. In view of this high response, and the influx of Friday has yet to be computed, it is expected to exceed 80,000 professionals, which means doubling the data recorded in 2021.
