The parliamentary groups of the Congress of Deputies had not achieved the necessary unanimity on Tuesday to modify the agenda of this week’s plenary session to force Sánchez to appear now, after assuming last Friday the model of autonomy that Morocco defends.

According to sources from different parties consulted by this newspaper, it has been the PNV spokesman, Aitor Esteban, who has officially raised this modification of the agenda during the Board of Spokespersons so that Sánchez can go to the Lower House to explain this change of position and forward thus the appearance scheduled for next week. The Executive, which has confirmed that this plenary session will be held on the 30th, defends that it should be then, during Sánchez’s intervention on the European Council next Thursday and Friday, when the president gives explanations about the Sahara.

But throughout this morning it has been all the opposition groups and also several of the Executive’s partners who have advocated holding a plenary session on the Sahara, apart from the appearance on the European Council. These parties have also claimed that Sánchez’s explanations must take place this week due to the unexpected turn known last Friday, which has also been criticized by the minority partner of the Executive, United We Can.

In order to modify the agenda of this week’s plenary session, which was set by the Board of Spokespersons last week, it was necessary that, at this Tuesday’s meeting, there be a united position of all the groups in favor of that change. And, as elDiario.es has learned, the PSOE spokesman in Congress, Héctor Gómez, has rejected it, so the required unanimity has not been achieved and the PNV proposal has declined.

Partner Warnings

At a press conference, the socialist spokesman wanted to make it clear that Sánchez was going to give explanations, but that they would be next week, on the 30th. Gómez also recalled that tomorrow the appearance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, in the Lower House, precisely to explain Spain’s new position on the Sahara.

The Government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, also assured in the press conference after the Council of Ministers that the president will appear in Congress to explain the European Council, the plan to respond to the war and the new agreement with Morocco, although has specified the date Irene Castro.

This very morning, United We Can and the main parliamentary partners of the Government – all except the PNV, which has not appeared – have warned the socialist part of the Executive of the risks that some of its latest measures entail, such as sending weapons to Ukraine , the increase in the Defense budget and the shift in Spain’s position on the Sahara, to maintain a “progressive majority” in Congress that can allow the Executive to conclude the legislature.
