After The Wolf of Wall Street which was filmed in 2013, Martin Scorsese Y Leonardo Dicaprio They will return to the ring together in a movie for Apple TV that goes by the name The Wager and that is about a shipwreck in Chilean Patagonia.
It will be an adaptation of New York journalist David Grann’s upcoming nonfiction book “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder.”
«The Wager“, to be published next April, tells the story of the British naval ship of the same name from 1700. During a secret mission to obtain a galleon full of Spanish treasures, the crew ended up shipwrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia Chilean. Stranded and forced to survive against the elements, the crew descends into anarchy, and when they return to civilization they end up on opposite sides of an intense court-martial, with accusations of murder and treason against various parties.
According to the Chilean story about the history:
«On the morning of May 14, 1741, full of damage and breakdowns, he ran aground, south of the Gulf of Penas, in the archipelago called Guayaneco. The crew swam to land salvaging some of the food.
With parts of the HMS Wager and with the sails, the men made tents to survive. Captain Cheap’s plan was to travel north with the launch and the boats they had saved, but his crew organized a mutiny led by John Buckley who proposed to return to Brazil through the Strait of Magellan and the Atlantic Ocean. The survivors were thus divided into two groups, one led by Buckley and the other by Captain Cheap, the latter traveling with Midshipman Byron and 18 other men, including Surgeon Elliot, Lieutenant Hamilton and Midshipman Campbell. . His objective was to meet in Chiloé with Admiral Anston.
Apparently the young midshipman Byron, just 18 years old, just turned 18, separates from the group and is rescued by an indigenous group Kawéskar (or Alacalufes) and perhaps Chonos, with whom he embarks and manages to advance north.
