American actor and film director Sean Penn is in Ukraine filming a documentary about the Russian invasion.
The material is produced for the Vice Studios chain, and according to the agency APwill include recordings of the defense operations of the Ukrainian Army near the Donetsk region, one of the separatist zones that were recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin before ordering a generalized invasion throughout the country.
The office of the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, confirmed that Penn is working on the documentary and even praised his “courage”.
“Sean Penn shows the courage that many others, especially Western politicians, lack,” Ukraine’s presidential office said on Facebook. “The director specially came to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country.”
Penn is known for his humanitarian calling. In 2010, the interpreter of Mystic River founded a non-profit organization to attend to the humanitarian crisis derived from the earthquake in Haiti, and which he portrayed in the documentary entitled Citizen Penn.
The actor is also remembered because, in recent years, he interviewed Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, leader of the bloodthirsty Sinaloa Cartel, prior to his arrest. After making his interview public, Guzmán was apprehended and later extradited to the United States, where he remains a prisoner.
