Selenskyj warns against scaremongering – the situation is no more tense than before

KIEV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns against exaggerated fears in the conflict with Russia.

“I don’t think the situation is any more tense than before,” said the head of state on Friday, referring to the delivery of US and NATO responses to Russian demands for security guarantees. “Abroad, there is the impression that war is raging here. That is not the case.” He cannot rule out a worsening of the situation. But panic is out of place. The main risk for Ukraine and its sovereignty is destabilization within the country, which also includes an economic crisis.

Russia has massed more than 100,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine. The West sees this as preparation for a possible invasion, which the government in Moscow denies. She demands security guarantees such as the promise that NATO will never take in Ukraine. The Alliance rejects this. Russia is currently examining the West’s response to the required security guarantees. The government in Moscow has declared that key requirements have not been met. But we are still ready for dialogue.
