Several injured in a shooting at a New York subway station

Several people have been shot and wounded in a shooting at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, this Tuesday morning.

Fire personnel responded to calls for smoke at the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn around 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters have confirmed that at least 13 people are injured, but apart from five gunshot wounds, Details about those injuries are unknown, according to US media.

Images distributed on social networks show several people injured and covered in blood being treated on a platform. Some photographs of a smoke-filled subway car have also been published.

Authorities have asked citizens to avoid the area, where numerous ambulances and police units have been deployed.

Reports of an explosion are being investigated, but the Police Department has tweeted that there are “no active explosive devices at this time. Mayor’s spokesman Fabien Levy has said that multiple smoke devices have been found at the scene, the AP reports.

“Regarding the multiple people shot at the 36th Street subway station in Brooklyn, there are no active explosive devices at this time. Please stay away from the area,” the New York City Police Department says on Twitter.

Police are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest as a possible suspect in the attack.
