Several protests once again denounce the deterioration of Primary Care in Galicia

The protests due to the chaos in Primary Care in Galicia do not stop. This weekend platforms in defense of public health in various towns have once again demonstrated to demand that the Xunta give more resources to health centers and continuous care points (PAC) that attend to emergencies outside hospitals. Residents of the Pontevedra municipalities of O Rosal, Moaña and Marín have demonstrated and have denounced the lack of doctors.

The lack of doctors leaves several PACs cared for only by nurses in Galicia: “We cannot continue like this”

The Plataforma pola Defensa do Centro de Saúde de Seixo, in Marín, points out that in recent days the PAC has been attended only by one or two nurses, despite the fact that there should be two doctors in the center. As a consequence, according to the association, the residents have filled the PAC of the neighboring municipality of Bueu. They criticize that planning has not improved despite the change in the management of the health area and attribute the decision of some professionals to leave Primary Care to “work where they are best treated” to this type of overload situation.

“We do not want patches or closures. We have the right to decent emergencies ”, claims the platform, which accuses the Xunta of dismantling public attention to favor private health.

In Moaña this Sunday a demonstration again demanded the reopening of the emergency room. The closure of the service, which forces residents to move to Cangas, has caused mobilizations for a year. The locality’s platform indicates that the Xunta promised that the service will return to work last September, but it has not happened.

Another of the points where protests are repeated over the situation of Primary Care is O Rosal. Neighbors of the municipality demonstrated on Saturday with a march between the town and the neighboring Town Hall of A Guarda. They denounce the “chronification of precariousness” in the health center and demand that the Xunta endow the service to cover the needs of the population. A few months ago, the lack of ambulances forced a patient to be transferred on a stretcher through the streets of the town to be taken to the hospital by helicopter. At that time, the only doctor in the health center was away because she had to accompany another patient and the emergency had to be attended by a retired doctor who had been hired only for administrative work.
