Six workers injured, two of them seriously, when a stage of the O Son do Camiño festival collapsed in Santiago

Part of a stage that was being set up for the O Son do Camiño festival in Santiago de Compostela has collapsed and there are six people injured, two of them in serious condition, according to data provided by the Xunta. The event occurred around 12:30 p.m. this Friday at Monte do Gozo, when the main structure for the concerts, scheduled for next week, was being erected.

Numerous health emergency media have traveled to the site, in addition to the Santiago firefighters and the National Police. Two of the workers have serious injuries and another four, minor.

Sources from the Xunta indicate that the causes of the collapse, which affects the main stage of the festival, are being investigated. They try to find the “fault” that caused the structure to collapse. Officials from the Labor Inspectorate dependent on the Ministry and the Galician Institute of Safety and Labor Health (Issga) have moved to the site, which will prepare two separate reports. The National Police also has an investigation open.

The second vice president of the Galician Government, Diego Calvo, has indicated that for the moment “the possibility of canceling the festival has not been put on the table”. The president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, later assured that he hopes that the event will be held “as normally as possible”, but stated that he does not have concrete information. The CCOO union has already requested that the conditions in which the scenarios were being set up be reviewed.

O Son do Camiño is one of the festivals, organized by the Esmerarte agency -responsible for others such as PortAmérica-, with funding from the Xunta within the activities linked to the Xacobeo. The Galician Government expects that around 120,000 people will pass through Monte do Gozo during the three days, some 42,000 per day, which represents growth compared to before the pandemic. In the 2019 edition, the festival brought together some 33,000 people.

The 2022 lineup, the largest of all editions, includes 47 artists, including C.Tangana, Liam Gallagher, Chemical Brothers and Jason Derulo. Just two days ago, he published the scheduled times for the concerts of each artist and the stage on which each one will play. Tickets and season tickets have been sold out since April.
