Spain reports the highest daily number of infections of the entire pandemic after adding 49,823 new cases

Spain has registered this Tuesday the highest number of daily infections since the start of the pandemic, after adding 49,823 new cases in 24 hours. Although the number is difficult to compare with those registered in the first wave, at the beginning of the health crisis, when the detection capacity was much lower, this number exceeds all those officially registered so far on the same day, also that of the January wave, when a peak of 44,357 daily cases was reached.

The Community of Madrid is the region that has contributed the highest number of new cases in the last 24 hours, after adding 11,054 infections and registering its own maximum; followed by Catalonia, with 10,273; and Andalusia, which adds 5,797. In total, since the beginning of the pandemic, 5,585,054 positives have been registered in Spain.

The rise in cases also dragged other indicators, such as that of accumulated incidence, which continues to rise and stands at 695.38 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this Tuesday, which represents a rise of 86 points compared to Monday. . The sixth wave thus deepens its escalation a few days before Christmas and on the eve of the Conference of Presidents where possible new restrictions to control the pandemic will be addressed.

Spain is at maximum risk of contagion, according to the indicators of the Ministry of Health, after the incidence exceeded the barrier of 500 cases on Friday.

The health authorities have also reported 94 deaths in the last day, a notable increase compared to the 41 registered on Friday. The global count of deaths from the pandemic amounts to 88,887.

Record of infections on the eve of the Conference of Presidents

These data come just one day after the Conference of Presidents called by the Government to address new restrictions on the Christmas holidays. The regional presidents attend tomorrow’s meeting with different proposals and measures that, in some cases, they are already beginning to implement in their territories. Catalonia, for example, has already asked the Justice to authorize the curfew and the closure of nightlife, restrictions that it has asked to be extended to the rest of communities.

Other regional presidents, such as Alberto Núñez Feijoo, have asked that the masks be returned to the open air.

Meanwhile, the Government wants to wait for the Conference of Presidents to communicate any type of decision on “new measures” that would operate for the next few weeks, according to Sánchez in a speech in which he did not accept questions from journalists. “They will allow me not to enter into the realization of some questions that the Government will raise in that meeting that intends to be one of pooling and analysis of the situation,” the spokeswoman replied at the press conference after the Council of Ministers. , Isabel Rodríguez, to the specific question of whether capacity will be limited and nightlife will be restricted, reports Irene Castro.
