In the Netherlands, a robbery that occurred on the evening of Tuesday, February 22, at an Apple Store on Leidseplein, in Amsterdam, ended in a hostage taking.

According to local reports, the situation would have resulted from a robbery with a firearm that caused the deployment of police forces. Seeing himself surrounded, the thief took a group of people as captives.

Initially, the police thought that it was a robbery in which several people were involved; however, this information was later discarded.

Some users shared videos on social networks showing the tense situation in the store. Certain Internet users said that detonations were carried out inside the establishment.

Meanwhile, the Amsterdam police confirmed that several police elements were deployed in the area.

“There is an individual who carries a firearm in the store in question; the police are on the spot with many specialized units to control the situation,” Amsterdam police said in a message posted on Twitter.

Local media reported that after the incident surrounding buildings were evacuated, including about seventy people who were in a dance hall.

At around 8:30 PM local time, the hostages, numbered in the dozens, were reportedly released.

The Amsterdam police said they have launched an investigation into these events.
