The Alfa Romeo Tonale debuts with a plug-in hybrid option | Digital Trends Spanish

The compact crossover Alfa Romeo Tonale 2023 finally made its long-awaited public debut, in which it confirmed the rumor that it would be the vehicle through which the historic Italian brand will enter the world of automotive electrification, although not yet fully. The new Tonale will be the first Alfa Romeo model to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the United States, when it begins shipping in North America in the first quarter of 2023.

Like its older sister the Stelvio, the Tonale was named after a European road. In this case, it is the Passo del Tonale, a high mountain pass in northern Italy that crosses the Rhaetian Alps between Lombardy and Trentino, which tests the maneuverability of the best cars in the world.

The new Alfa Romeo Tonale will be offered in the United States with a choice of two powertrains. The first of these is a plug-in hybrid configuration made up of a turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine with a displacement of 1.3 liters, which sends its 151 horsepower to the front axle through a six-speed automatic transmission, and a 121-horsepower electric motor on the rear axle, for a total combined system output of 272 horsepower.

The electric motor is powered by a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that Alfa Romeo claims gives it a range in electric mode of more than 30 miles (48 kilometers). The battery can be fully charged in just 2.5 hours with a Level 2 charger. The electric motor is also capable of producing 1,844 pound-feet of torque, which is why the Tonale has the ability to become a legend. asphalt in a very short time.

The second option is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drive system. The rest of the world will have the option of equipping their Tonales with either a 1.5-litre mild hybrid powertrain or a diesel engine.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale does not deviate much from the impressive concept model that we saw at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019, just before the start of the pandemic, which looked practically ready to be produced and was a smaller version and even more stylized than the Stelvio.

Its front end features the traditional Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille with groups of three LED lighting elements that include daytime running lights, which mark the contours of each of these elements by highlighting the horizontal character of each set, while the rear light clusters replicate the design of the headlights.

The production Alfa Romeo Tonale loses the concept’s flush door handles and side-view cameras, which are replaced by conventional door handles and mirrors, while the concept’s handsome five-element circular wheels are retained on the production car.

The new Tonale comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen that houses Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 software suite, which supports over-the-air updates. The system has connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and allows communication between home and car, and vice versa, through Alexa smart devices.

The list of standard safety technology systems on the new Tonales is long and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and collision detection. cross traffic behind the vehicle.

Buyers can opt for a Level 2 autonomous driving systems package, including intelligent adaptive cruise control, a lane departure prevention assistant and a congestion assistant that automatically adjusts the Tonale’s speed and trajectory, keeping it in the middle of the lane, at a correct distance from the vehicle in front, to ensure safety, comfort and some relief to a heavy traffic situation.

The new Alfa Romeo Tonale will be offered in the United States with three trim levels. The base or Sprint model will only be available with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, followed by the Ti in the middle of the lineup that will be available with both powertrains. At the top of the range is the Veloce variant, which will only be available with the plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Alfa Romeo did not advance information on the price of the new model.

Automotive NFT debuts

The Alfa Romeo Tonale It will be the first vehicle on the market equipped with a NFT (non-fungible token) digital certificate, based on blockchain technology and uniquely linked to each unit with information about it, such as the model variant, its color and the options it contains. Alfa Romeo certifies the NFT at the time of purchase and transfers it to the buyer.

The NFT is updated each time the vehicle is serviced at the dealership and evolves to represent its lifecycle use, with significant benefits in terms of residual value protection of the car, since it creates a digital record of the complete history of the vehicle.

Alfa Romeo did not reveal which company it partnered with to create these NFTs, but did say that owners can opt out of the program.
