Women’s Barcelona lifted the Spanish Super Cup this Sunday, after beating Atlético de Madrid 7-0. But beyond the sporting result, the most emotional thing has been that both teams have celebrated the return to the field of play of the soccer player Virginia Torrecilla, who has played her first minutes this weekend after overcoming cancer.
“The Super Cup was not the only victory today”, published FC Barcelona Femení on its Twitter account. They did it together with a video in which the Blaugrana players are seen to beat Torrecilla. An image that was also repeated among her teammates at the end of the match, played in Las Rozas.
From the Atlético de Madrid Women they have highlighted Torrecilla’s “example of overcoming”. “We have no words to describe this moment”, they published on their social networks along with a photograph of the midfielder, who had already been called up for the Super Cup semifinal against Levante, but who played her first minutes in the final after overcoming her illness.
Virginia Torrecilla underwent surgery in May 2020 after a tumor was detected in her head, which has kept her away from the fields ever since. The Spanish international, who participated in the 2019 World Cup in France, had been training with the team for three and a half months, according to the coach of the women’s Atlético Óscar Fernández a few days ago.
Her jump onto the field of play this Sunday has come to confirm, therefore, what the player herself already announced this Wednesday on her social networks: “Now yes… I’m back!”
