The BBC carries out a critical broadcast with Qatar instead of broadcasting the opening ceremony of the World Cup

While half the world watched the opening ceremony of the controversial Qatar 2022 World Cup on different television channels, the BBC, the historic British public broadcaster, has ignored the ceremony and issued a report critical of the treatment and conditions of workers migrants in the country hosting the sporting event. Despite the fact that the BBC had the rights to broadcast all the images of the event, viewers have had the opportunity to find out about the shadows that surround it before the first game.

The broadcast also talked about the corruption of FIFA, as well as the repressive laws with LGTBI rights. “It’s the most controversial World Cup in history and a ball hasn’t even been thrown yet,” said the presenter, former soccer player Gary Lineker, welcoming viewers at the beginning of the coverage, as reported by The Guardian.

“Since FIFA chose Qatar in 2010, the smallest country that has hosted soccer’s biggest competition has faced big questions – from allegations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums. in which many lost their lives. Homosexuality is illegal here. Women’s rights and freedom of expression are in the spotlight”, she continued while hundreds of artists and celebrities gathered at the stadium for the first World Cup match to kick off the game. “With this backdrop, there is a tournament to be played, seen and enjoyed around the world. Stick to soccer, says FIFA. Well, we will, at least for a couple of minutes”, the presenter concluded.

While viewers in other countries saw Jung Kook, a member of BTS and one of the most famous singers in the world, perform his new song; BBC One viewers watched as journalist Ros Atkins conducted an interview with Amnesty International and stated: “We’ve never seen a World Cup with a carbon footprint like this.”

Half an hour later they did talk about football: tactics, the ban on drinking alcohol in stadiums… And finally it was possible to see the first game, Qatar against Ecuador. But knowing the context in which it is being played.
