The Belgian far-right military man who had been missing for a month after threatening politicians and virologists was found dead this Sunday, after the police and the Army had been mobilized in the search operation for four weeks. According to a note released by the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office, he was found dead in the forests of the municipality of Dilsen-Stockem by some people who were walking. “According to the first elements of the investigation, the body would be that of Jürgen Conings, who has been missing since May 17, 2021.”
“The cause of death most likely, according to the first observations, points to a suicide by firearm,” says the Prosecutor’s Office: “But this cause will have to be established with certainty during the forensic examination.”
On the morning of Monday, May 17, Conings, 46, left his home in Dilsen-Stokkem in the morning heavily armed. He went to work and was never seen again. A member of the extreme right-wing military man, his whereabouts were unknown since then after having launched threats against Belgium’s best-known virologist, Marc Van Ranst, who was transferred (along with his family) to a safe and secret place.
Then, a suicide note was found in which Connings threatened violent action against politicians and virologists whom he accused of “ruling” his life, reported VRT, which related that Conings had already been sanctioned in the army for his behavior. At that time, he was placed in an administrative position, although this sanction was later reversed, allowing him to become a shooting instructor.
Jurgen Conings, according to the mugshot, “is about six feet tall and muscular. He is bald and has tattoos, especially on his arms (above the elbow). At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a men’s T-shirt. the Timberland brand (dark color) “. And he added: “He may be in possession of firearms.”
“The intentions of Conings, according to the first elements of the investigation, seem potentially aggressive towards institutions or personalities,” affirmed the Prosecutor’s Office when the former military officer disappeared.
The Belgian Threat Analysis Unit (OCAD) set the Conings threat level at 4 “to allow for enhanced coordination of action by the authorities, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the National Crisis Center co-direct operations.”
