toyota-rav4

Why should you buy it?: it has everything you need in a crossover.

For whom it is? For those who need to transport equipment or people.

Why did we choose the Toyota RAV4? The Toyota RAV4 is what a car-derived crossover should be. It’s reasonably large, so it can carry five adults and whatever they can carry with them easily and offers a relatively generous amount of space. There’s even a TRD version that’s better off-road than the original model.

However, it is more efficient than its footprint suggests. Front-wheel drive comes standard and helps the RAV4 get 30mpg on the combined cycle, while four-wheel drive is offered at extra cost. These numbers are impressive considering the RAV4’s weight and size, and further illustrate what often makes crossovers more attractive than SUVs. Toyota also offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants for better efficiency.

best midsize crossover

subaru ascent

Why should you buy it? Because it’s a great vehicle that doesn’t feel big.

For whom it is? big families.

Why did we choose the Subaru Ascent? The Ascent was designed primarily to keep Subaru owners who needed larger vehicles from defecting to other brands, but it’s a solid choice even if your current model isn’t a Forester or Outback. In addition to plenty of space (including 19 cup holders!), the seven-seat Ascent boasts a robust array of technology features and impressive driving dynamics.

Available technical features include built-in Wi-Fi that can support up to eight devices and a rearview mirror that displays real-time video. Similar to versions offered on certain General Motors and Nissan vehicles, it displays a rear-mounted camera feed in the mirror, giving the driver an unobstructed view up rear pillars or passenger heads. The Ascent is also available with the feature set Subaru EyeSight driver-assist features, which include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist, as well as a head-up display that reads safety prompts.

While not a sports car, the Ascent is also quite enjoyable to drive. Its 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque is more than adequate, and unlike some competitors, Subaru offers all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The Ascent handles twisty roads like a much smaller car, and even offers a useful 5,000-pound towing capacity.

best compact crossover

Volvo XC40

Ronan Glon/Digital Trends

Why should you buy it? For its practicality and European style, ease of use.

For whom it is? For those who want the most beautiful and easiest to drive compact crossover in the world.

Why did we choose the XC40? Sitting on the top rung of the “Best Compact Crossover” category is the Volvo XC40, which we drove some time ago. We love the ability of the Volvo to charm not only its occupants, but all those who see it arrive at its destination. The purely contemporary and elegant European design of the XC40 is easy on the eye, but also very 21st century. And the people-focused, driver-friendly interior makes time spent traveling a breeze.

Without a doubt, it is more oriented towards comfort than sport and performance. But while it may not be as exciting as the BMW X1, its refinement and smoothness tick almost all the boxes to define it as a luxury crossover.

With the XC40, Volvo is also looking to break the traditional cycle of ownership of «three-year lease» for a subscription service. Depending on location, the XC40 also comes with Care by Volvo. You have access to a range of bespoke digital concierge services, such as refueling, cleaning, pick up and delivery service, and more, all in the hope of minimizing the traditional hassles that come with choosing, buying and operating a vehicle.

The best subcompact crossover

hyundai kona

Why should you buy it? Because it provides sports performance at a price below the average.

For whom it is? For those on a tight budget who don’t want to sacrifice fun.

Why did we choose the Hyundai Kona? The Kona looks fun to drive, and surprisingly it is, even at its $20K starting price. The base 2.0-liter engine with 147 horsepower moves this subcompact SUV very well, but the turbocharged 1.6-liter with 175 horsepower is quicker. The turning radius is tight, and the low position means cornering is always safe. No matter which engine you choose, the Kona is rated at 30 mpg combined. There’s also an all-electric version available with an estimated 258 miles of range per charge.

The Kona’s interior is nicer than you’d expect for this price. It’s well designed and the materials don’t feel cheap. the system infotainment it is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the updated system includes wireless device charging. Lane Keeping Assist and Forward Collision Warning are standard features, with other safety features – such as adaptive cruise control – available on more expensive trims.

The best performance crossover

Porsche Macan Turbo

Why should you buy it? Because it is – literally – a Porsche stuffed into the body of a crossover.

For whom it is? For those who like to maximize the utility of a car without losing sight of entertainment.

Why did we choose the Porsche Macan Turbo? It may not be a 911, but the smaller of Porsche’s two crossovers is one of the sportiest vehicles of its kind. Like the larger Cayenne, the Macan strives to live up to the responsibility of carrying the Porsche name.

The Macan Turbo is the top version, offering the performance to rival more than one sports car. Its 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 produces 434 horsepower and 406 pound-feet. Porsche says the Macan Turbo goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, if equipped with the Sport Chrono package, and has a top speed of 167 mph. An optional Performance Package boosts output to 440 horsepower and 442 pound-feet, reducing 0-60 mph acceleration time by 0.2 seconds, while increasing top speed by 5 mph.

the system infotainment of the Porsche is the best on the market, as it is intuitive and fast. To get the most out of the Macan Turbo, you need to select from a long list of options, including packages SportChrono Y Performance, as well as the active suspension system. with all that hardware, can rub elbows with the more traditional Porsche sports models. But even without it, the Macan Turbo is still a small crossover very competent and with a sporty character.

The best fuel-efficient crossover

Kia Niro PHEV

Why should you buy it? Because it’s more of a car than a crossover.

For whom it is? Urbanites in need of a crossover.

Why did we choose the Kia Niro PHEV? With its small footprint, low ride height and complete lack of pretense off roadThe Kia Niro is more of an enlarged hatchback than a proper crossover. This is a good thing, as it means buyers don’t have to sacrifice fuel economy for a roomy interior and higher seating position.

Kia offers several variants of the Niro, including a battery electric model and a hybrid. We chose the plug-in hybrid model as the best of the lot because it strikes an ideal balance between efficiency and ease of use. It is powered by a gasoline and electric motor made up of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a small electric motor. Kia claims a driving range of 560 miles, or 46 mpg combined with both power sources running. You can drive it up to 26 miles on electricity alone, if the battery is fully charged.

We spent time with the Niro PHEV and concluded that it drives like a normal car. It also looks like one. Unfortunately, front-wheel drive is the only configuration available, and Kia isn’t planning on adding all-wheel drive anytime soon.

How we test these vehicles

The Digital Trends automotive team examines vehicles on the road through a comprehensive testing process. We examine the qualities of the exterior and interior, and judge them based on our experience and knowledge in the context of the vehicle’s category and price range. Entertainment technology is thoroughly tested, as are most security features that can be tested in controlled environments.

Drivers spend a lot of time behind the wheel of vehicles, performing real-world tests, driving them on highways, back roads, as well as race tracks and off-road where appropriate.

A clarification and a useful tip

Automakers tend to use and conflate the terms “crossover,” “crossover,” and “SUV” interchangeably, which is not entirely accurate. Much of the blame lies with the marketing departments: brands choose to describe their vehicles based on public sentiment, rather than their objective descriptions.

Therefore, calling any of the vehicles listed above an “SUV” would be incorrect. Why? Because the crosses or crossovers begin to be manufactured with the architecture «unibody” of a car, which simply means that its body and chassis (or “foundation,” to put it one way), are one piece. The SUVs use a “body-in-frame” makeup that comes to join two independent pieces. This is really the only distinction between these two types of car, although the secondary effects of the origin unibody compared to the bodywork of a real SUV they are significant. Initially, a body unibody it’s lighter, which translates to better fuel efficiency, more agility and a smoother ride. Meanwhile, the heavier “body-on-frame” design is much more durable, both in terms of rust and when handling high-impact terrain.

Now that you know the basic differences, you just have to decide what you really want the vehicle for. do you plan to do a lot off road or trailer, or live in hard-to-reach areas? Well, you’ll need an SUV. Do you want something efficient, comfortable and more affordable, and do you tend to move around the city instead? A crossover is the right choice. With a little more light on this subject, we end this article, and if what you really need is an all-terrain vehicle, be sure to consult the following guide.
