In new research, a scientific team tries to show how much information is available in the entire observable universe.

Melvin M. Vopson, a physicist at the University of Portsmouth, has determined that every particle in the universe contains 1,509 bits of information and there are approximately 6 times 10 to the 80 bits of information stored in all matter particles in the observable universe.

For decades, researchers believe that there is a connection between information and the physical universe. In fact, they estimate that information could be encoded in physical matter.

To make this estimate, Vopson used Claude Shannon’s information theory to quantify the information encoded in every elementary particle in the universe.

“This is the first time this approach has been taken to measure the information content of the universe and it provides a clear numerical prediction,” explains Vopson.

“Even if it is not entirely accurate, numerical prediction offers a potential avenue for experimental testing.”

Although the resulting number is huge, the physicist clarifies that it is not yet large enough to explain the dark matter in the universe.

This would require a quantity of bits 10 trillion times greater than what he has obtained to be able to do it.

Vopson claims that the calculated number is less than he expected, while another colleague who participated in the work, Greg Laughlin, explains that this “is like ignoring not the elephant in the room, but the 10 billion elephants in the room.” .

Either way, the Yale University astronomer highlights the results that have been published in the study:

“Calculating the information content, basically the number of bits of memory it would take to run the universe, is interesting,” Laughlin said.
