‘The Figo case: The signing of the century’ premieres on Netflix | Digital Trends Spanish

Luís Figo was the most coveted player in world football when he stepped onto the balcony of the gothic Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of Catalonia’s presidency, on a warm summer afternoon in 1998. Dressed in club attire, his hair dyed azulgrana, celebrated the last league title of the Barcelona before an enthusiastic public, chanting with the microphone: «Whites, weepers; congratulate the champions!” Two years later, he jumped onto the Camp Nou pitch, the Barcelona Football Club stadium, wearing the white Real Madrid kit. He was the first player to join the legendary “Galactic” revolution of this team. He was the most expensive and highest paid footballer in the world. He was the most hated man in Catalonia.

This is how the premiere was born on August 25, The Figo case: The signing of the century in Netflixa documentary film directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas (Pelé) and produced by Pitch Productions.

The documentary film, which examines one of the most controversial agreements in the history of football, exposes for the first time the in-depth testimonies of its main protagonists, two decades after the transfer: Luís Figo (protagonist of the film, who signed for Barcelona in 1995, to go to his eternal rival, Real Madrid, five years later); José Veiga (Figo’s agent for most of his career and the figure who negotiated the deal) and; Florentino Pérez (who began his presidency with the audacious transfer).

The Figo case: The signing of the century It is the result of a deep research work, with more than 30 hours of interviews with its 12 main participants. The documentary collects the testimonies of some of the most relevant figures in Spanish football such as Joan Gaspart, Paulo Futre, Pep Guardiola, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Hierro, Jorge Valdano, José Ramón de la Morena, José Félix Díaz or Toni Frieros. In addition, the title contains files never before seen in Spain and Portugal, including images from Figo’s personal collection during his time in Barcelona and his vacation in Sardinia in the summer of 2000.

“Given how much media coverage it got at the time, it’s a story that people think they know well or have preconceptions about, but we were amazed at the twists, turns and emotional depth we discovered in making the film. It is increasingly difficult to find a sports documentary that says something new, that is not simply a biography or a recount of sports successes or failures, but we believe that ‘The Figo case: The signing of the century’ It’s unique. Focusing on the transfer rather than Figo’s career, the film shows us different sides of truth, greed, morality and the evolution of an entire sport: the birth of football as a big amoral business above the romantic notions of loyalty; not to mention the origin story of Florentino Pérez. It has been a privilege to make this film and, following the release of ‘Pele’ last year, we are delighted to be working with Netflix again on another great sports story.”

With access to the statements of Luís Figo and those of the men who brokered the deal that broke the transfer record, divided a nation and shaped modern football; The Figo case: The signing of the century reveals the gripping story of how his signing came to be: a twisted tale of behind-the-scenes dealings, a truly historic sports rivalry, a deep cultural divide, and a pig’s head.
