The highest regional representatives in matters of Energy, Tourism and Commerce, as well as the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), have been summoned to the meeting on Monday, which will be held electronically, the Ministry for Ecological Transition has reported. The meeting will be chaired by the Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, together with the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, and the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen.
“The objective of the meeting is to align the energy saving and efficiency policies of all administrations, and thus reaffirm in solidarity the commitment to save 7% of the energy consumption acquired by Spain before the EU to face the socioeconomic consequences of the invasion of Ukraine by the regime of Vladimir Putin”, the Government reported in a press release. The meeting, the document specifies, will also serve to “clear up doubts about the scope and application of the provisions contained in the RDL”, which will come into force at 00:00 hours on Wednesday, August 10.
“The institutions and their managers are the ones who are called to set an example for the public and lead the vocation of solidarity of Spanish society,” adds the note. Although it later lowered its tone, the Community of Madrid was the first to protest against the energy saving measures and has threatened to take the Royal Decree to the Constitution. The Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, stated at first that she would not apply it because “it scares tourism” and “causes darkness and sadness.” Meanwhile, the PP has had to strike a balance so as not to disavow Ayuso in his war against energy saving with Ayuso on the one hand and, on the other, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, a popular leader who two weeks ago called for a plan similar to the one proposed by the Executive .
The so-called “Shock Plan for energy saving and management in air conditioning” provides, among other measures, for the adjustment of thermostats in administrative buildings, commercial and cultural spaces, train and bus stations and airports. In summer, specifically, it establishes a minimum temperature of 27 degrees, with flexibility depending on the type of establishment and labor legislation.
In addition to controlling the thermostat, the lights in the shop windows must be turned off after 10:00 p.m. and the lighting in public spaces when they are not in use, while their doors must be closed when the heating systems are working. heating or cooling. In this sense, by September 30, these establishments should have a system for closing doors.
The plan approved by the Government is part of the European Union’s strategy to reduce energy consumption in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the expectation that in the coming months the supply of Russian gas may be affected.
