The phones of Pedro Sánchez and Margarita Robles have been infected with Pegasus. This has been revealed by the Minister of the Presidency at a press conference called by Moncloa urgently in Moncloa this Monday. “We are facing illegal and external infections,” said Félix Bolaños. The two reports from the National Cryptologic Center have been brought to the attention of the justice system so that it can initiate an investigation because, according to the Government, the espionage is “illicit”, since evidently there was no judicial authorization. The complaint was filed this morning with the National High Court.
The “verification” launched by the Executive was produced as a result of the information about the espionage with Pegasus that has affected some 66 people linked to the independence movement that The Citizen Lab revealed and that has placed the coalition in its most delicate moment with parliamentary partners.
“We are absolutely sure that it is an external attack. All interventions are produced by state agencies and with judicial authorization. We have no doubt that it is an external intervention,” Bolaños replied, explaining that the revelations have occurred “in the course of those verifications” that the center is carrying out. The terminals of the rest of the members of the Government are being analyzed to determine if they were also infected or if only the president and the Minister of Defense were the targets.
In any case, Bolaños did not want to “speculate” on the motives behind said espionage that occurred in May 2021 in the case of the president and June of that same year in the case of Robles. Pegasus meddling with Sanchez’s device occurred twice. In the first one, 2.6 gigabytes of information were extracted and in the second, 130 megabytes. However, the Government does not know what kind of information it is.
From the Executive they rule out that later there have been new attacks on these terminals. Not even failed attempts. “There is no evidence that any intrusion has occurred after these dates,” said Bolaños, who recalled that there is evidence that Pegasus software has been used illegally in 20 countries. In the Executive they deny that there has been a security breach given the delay in knowing about the espionage to the president.
The Government had called the press conference by surprise at 7:00 and for more than two hours the causes of it have not transpired. On the Moncloa agenda for this Monday, only acts were planned for the Third Vice President of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, who is going to participate in the Extraordinary Council of Ministers of Transport, Telecommunications and Energy of the European Union.
