The largest offshore wind farm in Spain will cover 30% of Galicia’s consumption

The promoters of mayor eolico Park marine that is currently being processed in Spain They are very clear about why they chose Galicia for their location. The closure of the Naturgy thermal plant in Meirama and the upcoming closure of the Endesa coal-fired power plant in As Pontes leave “a deficit that needs to be covered” and there are two reasons why, in his opinion, floating technology “is postulated as a very attractive renewable source & rdquor ;. Which? that the region stands out “for having a high resource & rdquor; and the existence of “a consolidated supply chain that, moreover, is a pioneer in this sector”. “Therefore, offshore wind energy is a great opportunity for Galicia, positioning itself as a key element to face future challenges, among which are energy dependence on other countries, the increase in demand in electricity consumption and the decarbonization process” , assure the two companies in the initial document of the project sent to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition where, finally, reveal the location: in the Rías Altas, off the coast of Ferrolterra.

The draft of the Maritime Space Management Plans (POEM) identifies this area as one of the three possible epicenters for the development of wind power offshore by the quality of the wind, the environmental impact and the possible collision with other fundamental activities, such as maritime traffic and, above all, fishing. The project for the Nordés complex aspires to take advantage of “the opportunity to exploit the high wind power potential of the area”, which it presents as “one of the areas with the greatest wind power potential in the Iberian Peninsula”. “The location of the project therefore responds to the availability of the wind resource on the Galician coast –say the promoters–, also considering multiple criteria to assess the technical, environmental and economic viability of the project”.

The park is located more than 30 kilometers from the Ferrol coastline within a 270 square kilometer action area, occupying an effective area of 134 square kilometers. In a first commercial phase, BlueFloat and Sener They foresee the implementation of 35 wind turbines of 15 megawatts (MW) each. The initial power would reach 525 MW. In the next phase, another 45 mills of the same capacity would be placed, so that the facilities would add a total power of 1,200 MW. The estimated production per year is around 4,800 gigawatts/hour (GWh), about 30% of all electricity consumption in Galicia in 2020.

In case of obtaining the corresponding authorizations, the Nordés wind farm will build two floating substations. The connection point on land to dump the production will be the Sabón knot (Arteixo). According to the two companies that lead the project, the hookup currently has a gap of 375 MW, although they recall that this capacity margin is pending a public tender by the Secretary of State for Energy and it will be necessary to “work together & rdquor ; with the administrations “to see possible solutions to reach the evacuation powers necessary for development & rdquor; of the park “in future phases”.

“It should be noted in particular that the project does not only involve the development of a new electrical infrastructure in Galicia, but that it can become an important engine of economic and technological development of the territory, with the consequent socioeconomic benefit at local and regional level in the medium and long term. term & rdquor ;, they justify. Among these “positive impacts”, BlueFloat and Sener they mention the creation of 14,000 direct jobs “during the construction and dismantling phase”, of which “about 6,000” they would be in Galicia. In operation and maintenance, 240 people would work throughout the year. To that they add the “improvement of the positioning of Galicia & rdquor; in the construction of offshore wind components. The execution will have “a high local content”, since “it is proposed that a significant part of the manufacturing activity and subsequent assembly be carried out in the main shipyards and Galician ports”.

The promoters include specialized training programs for workers, R&D collaboration agreements with universities and technology centers and even the creation of “an area of exclusion & rdquor; for “high-impact fishing, such as trawling”, which, they say, “would facilitate the recovery of the stocks”.
